Kealakehe Culinary group with Karen Sheff
Updated: Dec 29, 2020
This was a very last minute group that came together amid the first cancellation of programs due to COVID. We are grateful that we were able to host this group and forge a strong alliance with Kealakehe HS and their culinary instructor extraordinaire, Karen Sheff. We were expecting a group from Japan at this time, but since all travel and events were being restricted, we switched to host a local group who were supposed to go to the mainland for a cooking competition.
While the group stayed at Huehue Ranch, they cooked up a storm incorporating produce and herbs harvested from our gardens. Keala Ching, our local cultural practitioner came by to share his manaʻo about some of the food plants grown in our gardens. The students enjoyed a poke cookout competition, while the Akahiao staff enjoyed indulging in amazing creations. No program is complete without Jeffʻs workshops infused with tea servings. The students had their daily multiple dose of teas throughout their stay.
